Canvas Scratch Nights are a place to gather great creative minds in Cornwall and provide a place for new collaborations to be formed.
On Monday 17th August at 7.30pm, we launched the first of these exciting events at the beautiful and very inspiring Kneehigh Barns in Gorran Haven.
As a bunch of lovely people gathered on the cliffs to take in the view, they enjoyed a glass of the finest beer from Black Rock Brewery and were serenaded by the talented Ben Sutcliffe, from The People's String Foundation, on Violin.
After an introduction to Canvas, the evening then progressed inside to share several pieces of new writing in various stages of development.
Once ushered in to Kneehigh’s infamous Barns, kindly lent to us for the evening we watched readings of the new work in the following running order:
- Two People One Bag of Stars by Jane Spurr
- Ladders by Madeleine Wilshere
- Made of Stars by Rosanna Elliott and Ciaran Clarke
- Silver Bells and Cockle Shells by Olivia Lowry
- Rat by Anna Maria Murphy (with violin accompaniment by Ben Sutcliffe)
- Night Letters by Ross Dungan
Prior to the Scratch Night we had sent a call out to writers to send us something which revolved around the theme of Stars; we then read through the submissions, matched up the writer with actors, if needed, and on the day Rosanna and Ciaran helped to direct each piece before the audience arrived.
We asked those attending to offer anonymous feedback to the writers, performers and to us, whilst they munched on homemade pizza, before heading off down the country roads to home.
It was a really wonderful first event and it’s success has only fired us on to plan more, we are keen to explore the best way to facilitate constructive feedback around the development of new work and look forward to seeing projects grow from it. Watch this space for the next event...
